About Wendy McCleave

Some background information about me and my work
I studied at Farnham College and University College Falmouth and was fortunate to have the late Jill Lewin as a mentor.

I am a member of the Old Bakery Artists (OBA) and work from one of 5 open studios above Magpie in Warminster.

Artists who inspire me include Cezanne who, more than anybody for me, could capture the real-ness of things - the very "appleness" of apples; Richard Diebenkorn; Jasper Johns; Kitaj; Wilhelmina Barnes Graham; Celia Paul; Gwen John and many more. Last year I particularly enjoyed the work of Kurt Jackson, Kristin Vestgard and Kate Flood.

A great advocate of sketching, I never go anywhere without a sketchbook and drawing materials. I find it easier to work freely in a sketchbook and it's a great way to experiment with different media without getting precious about the finished work. What I particularly love about sketches is that, like poems, they capture forever a moment in time so that, when I look at them, I'm transported back to that place and that moment with all the sounds, scents and emotions still intact.

Here are a few pages from my sketchbooks:
